I love this so much, and everything like it, that I could just squeak.
The roots come out of the sides where the leaves were ripped out. Sometimes you can see them in there. The roots do not come out of the bottom.
That's why you rip off more leaves than you feel comfortable ripping off. That whole area gets planted underground.
Eventually, all the old leaves may fall off and new leaves will form.
At two years, a shoot forms in the center and grows upward with a new tiny pineapple on top. Your plant will be a pineapple top growing a stick with a smaller pineapple on top with its own new green top.
Do you think this will grow? It is trying to germinate. At least the shell is opening to reveal its inner seed.
