The brown stuff in the circular pattern is water retention material. The stuff works pretty well in the pots outdoors. We are very dry here in Denver. Near desert. Without a dome these cups could dry out in one day. I'll put a dome on them, but I'm making a point over here, okay? I'm tired of killing things by not getting to them fast enough. This gives me a little wiggle room for negligence.
