The ham is salty, large, heavy and unwieldy and it hogs valuable space in the refrigerator. Its bulk can be managed this way with a bowl covered with plastic or placed inside a grocery bag. The slices get smaller as the ham is used up so the whole thing can be switched to a smaller bowl until it is gone. Brace yourself for ham sandwiches, ham and eggs, ham with greens, ham in salads, ham in soups, ham in scalloped potatoes, ham tacos, ham with beans, ham and rice, ham with random vegetables, what have you. And during this whole period of heavy ham use the cooking salt is greatly reduced because the ham itself is so salty.
