Mashed potato and hamburger without bun

"Where did that gravy come from?"

It was here the whole time. On the stove. From yesterday. Growing bacteria probably. Then I turned up the heat and killed everything all over again. Ruthless. We humans are just flat naturally ruthless.

We kill bacteria all the time like we are natural enemies.

So I asked the Masters of the Universe why do we have so much problems with virus and germs and bacteria.

The Masters paused. Looked at me. Regarded me. Then they told me "Because your bodies are made so much like bacteria and germs."

What?

"The genetic code for life on experimental planets is adjusted by one single element that has unpredictable ramifications."

What?

"Look, you asked, we answered. Okay?"

This answer of yours needs some background information to sink in.

"Okay fine. One out of every ten planets is experimental for life coding. The pattern for life coding is long well established while variations are explored. As with other one out of ten planets, your planet was chosen for its original life-pattern to be adjusted by one single genetic element. Much thought and discussion was put into which specific element. This change for your entire planet resulted unpredictably in all of your evolved bodies for every species to be overly similar to invading microscopic life forms."

Oh.  How dreadful.

        "I know, right?"

Colossal planetary mismanagement.

"Well, live and learn, innit. The thing is, we never did that same alteration again. The rest of the universe is settled away from your ... ew ... unfortunately hazardous little-critter condition. They're all over you."
